Anping county has begun its first project for generating electricity from renewable sources of energy. The measures taken by the county are expected to reduce energy consumption and air pollution, Hengshui Daily reported on Aug 10.
The project, which is environmentally friendly and will save energy, is to take advantage of local crop straws, plus forestry and agricultural residues, for power generation and heating.
The project is divided into two phases, with a total investment of 2 billion yuan ($30.09 million). The first phase is an investment of 1.2 billion yuan, with a designed annual power generation capacity of 480 million kilowatt hours and a heating capacity reaching 550,000 Gilbert Joule.
When the project is completed, it is expected to cut coal consumption by around 200,000 tons by using 427,000 tons of crop straws for fuel and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 520,000 tons. This should be very effective in the improvement of air quality and increase the incomes of farmers by recycling their crop straws.
In addition, the project is able to provide heating for about 4.3 million square meters in winter to meet the needs of local residents.
