China’s first village-level museum on the theme of canal culture has recently been completed, Hengshui Daily reported on Aug 26.

Covering an area of more than 2,400 square meters, the museum has been transformed from an old school. It is located at Weiquan village of Matou county in Hengshui city, which has enjoyed a reputation for its colorful canal culture since the Sui and Tang dynasties, as it has been used as a center for freight on the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal in Hebei province.

The Canal Memory Museum has information on river transportation, the history of local agriculture, folk culture and local foods. In total the museum features around 100 exhibits, including old fishing boats, anchors, fishing nets, ploughs and looms.
