A bicycle race was held in Raoyang county, Hengshui city in Hebei province on Sept 4, with the aim of improving people’s environmental consciousness and also to enhance the county’s popularity.
The race, which has two levels covering 10 kilometers and 18 kilometers, attracted some 300 players taking part.
The race track took competitors around fruit and vegetable planting areas, and many were deeply impressed by the county’s achievements in modern agriculture.
Yang Xiaoyu, chairman of Cangzhou city’s cycling association, said that he would recommend his friends visit Raoyang as he had had a good experience during the bicycle race and had enjoyed the beautiful scenery.
Raoyang, which covers an area of 573 square kilometers and has a population of 300,000, used to be a poverty-stricken part of the country.
It has since developed itself into a fruit and vegetable supply-base for the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area. The county has a vegetable planting area of 22,670 hectares and a grape planting area of 7,330 hectares, with annual vegetable and fruit production of 2.4 million tons.
