Hengshui in Hebei province recently distributed 1.58 million yuan ($236,895) from public funds to 305 students from poor backgrounds on Aug 18.
The annual grants began in 2002, and have since helped more than 6,300 students from poverty-stricken families, with more than 13 million yuan handed out so far.
“This year, we supported 305 students from the city; seven of them received grants of 10,000 yuan, eight of them got 8,000 yuan, and 290 of them got 5,000 yuan,” said Chen Ping, deputy director of Hengshui’s civil affairs bureau.
Evaluation criteria for students receiving the grant included family financial status, college entrance examination scores, and college admissions.
Liu Yuhua, deputy mayor of Hengshui municipal government, said that compared to previous years, more students than ever received financial support.
